Search Engine Term…

22 Aug

So someone got here by searching for: “Is Rob Bell leaving Mars Hill”…To which I reply 1. He is only “contracted” to speak 21 times at Mars Hill this year so you might say he has already checked out (though if i could get a job working less than half the year and being a international superstar I would too). Something tells me though that if I attended Mars Hill I might be a little ticked off that my “pastor” does not want to spend much time with me. Maybe that is not how the MH’ers feel though… I mean we know that most of them have a low aptitude when it comes to orthodox theology, but you would think that their emotions would still work (especially in a church that is really just repackaging humanism with a Hebrew flair).  2. My guess is that if he “leaves” it will not be so much his decision… So you might want to search for “Mars Hill Lets Rob Bell Go…” Of course I can not prove that, It is just what I am hearing. Cause I gots peoples yo.

I can at least give props to Brian McLaren for understanding what a pastor is supposed to do…that is, actually have a flock that he is committed to. Brian of course doens’t pastor anymore because he felt more compelled to be a worldwide speaker than a pastor…which is fine.

This does spread to more than just the emergent stream as well. I really think that a pastor has to understand how to say no, even if it is big “gig” so that they can shepherd their flock that they have been given charge to.

I left a church about 5 years ago, and one of the reasons was that the pastor seemed more interested in going to D.C. to propose his new plans than to be a pastor. There needs to be a balance and for the pastor the scale should always tip in the direction of their flock, not speaking engagements.

The thing to understand about Mars Hill and Rob Bell though is that his job is the “teaching pastor.” His job isn’t to spend time with people and shepherd them. He isn’t even the senior pastor of the church. His sole role there is to be the teacher.
So you can disagree with that setup in a church if you want, but you can’t fault the guy for not spending time with the thousands of people who go there, when that’s not what the church has asked him to do.

I agree…But the deal is that they are currently looking for a new teaching pastor and he is only “contracted” to speak 21 times this year…or 50 % so I would say that is an issue….

Looking for a new – or another – teaching Pastor doesn’t necessarily mean that they are looking to replace/unload Rob. I could see him teaming up with another teacher so that he has more capacity to continue to create books, videos and tours.

Let’s deal with reality and not try to embellish truth or ambiguity to gain hits on your blog…

    Official Mars Hill Statement:

“Our search team tasked with identifying and employing an additional teaching pastor has formed and has begun its pursuit. Chaired by Covenant Member Don Maine, this team looks to significantly enhance our consistency by ensuring we have two teaching pastors: Rob Bell teaching 24-27 Sundays per year as in the past, and the additional voice teaching 15-20 Sundays per year. The team has performed extensive interviews with staff and community members and has completed a candidate profile. They are now networking with individuals from both within and outside our community in moving the search forward.”

Its seems like us Christians should better spend time doing .. oh, lets say.. pure and FAULTLESS religion..
    James 1:27
Religion that God our Father accepts as PURE and FAULTLESS is this: to look after orpahns and widows in their distress and to keep one self from being polluted by the world.
How about we just BE the church and stop attacking … its a waste of the your GOD GIVEN time…. and is it REALLY winning others to Christ when you attack people? You see, I used to be this way… I used to be a hypocritical, opinionated “church goer” … then I found Jesus. I then decided to stop speaking with the tongues of angles only… I chose love.
Oh, and I dont go to Mars Hill so thats not the reason for my post, I just think all this bashing hurts my Savior.

i think that it’s really sad that you spend so much of your energy blasting a fellow Christian b/c he doesn’t see & understand theological issues exactly the same way you do! maybe your wrong about some things also…as long as we believe & accept Jesus as Lord & Savior what is REALLY more important than that? it’s just sad that we (myself included) can spend so much time arguing & “discussing” theological issues instead of agreeing on the most important issue and then showing & telling those that don’t know Jesus…
